Things went totally haywire a couple of nights ago. What seems to have happened was that the CAPTCHA test used to block spam comments seems to have gone missing. I know the CAPTCHA thing was a pain in the ass. Who likes typing all those extra letters? Plus, there was a little quirk where if you tried to preview your comment, it would get flagged as a possible malicious post when you tried to post it. But that CAPTCHA thing was the answer to my prayers. Before it was installed, I spent upwards of twelve hours a day deleting spam comments (give or take eleven hours). After it was installed&#8212nothing.

Once it disappeared, though, I was deluged with spam once again. Over two hundred messages came flooding in at once. And the part where things went haywire went like this: Movable Type sends an e-mail to my Yahoo account to notify me when a comment has been left. In turn, whenever I get an e-mail to my Yahoo account, my chat program, Trillian, gives me a little pop-up to notify me immediately. So, suddenly, I was deluged with hundreds of pop-ups all at once. It was like the bad old days of the infuriating Whack-a-Mole game that was web browsing before Firefox and pop-up blockers.

That problem has been fixed for the meantime, but the upshot is that there have been a few kinks lately while Cracked.com changes servers. My updates aren’t coming up right away. I can’t access my website stats. And you might have trouble making comments. Don’t worry, though; for now, I’ll be once again laboriously going through the spam filter to sort the wheat from the chaff, so your comments will appear eventually. And one of the benefits of being a Cracked blogger is that a dedicated IT guy is evidently working day and night to unfuck up my blog. So hopefully things will be back to normal and I’ll be spam-free before long. On the bright side, if you’re looking for herbal Viagra, discount handbags, or dog-on-girl porn, I can now set you in the right direction.

Oh, and if any of you took my CAPTCHA thing, I’d like it back please. I’ll just be over here not paying any attention, and if it should suddenly reappear, I would totally appreciate it and no questions will be asked.

  1. 200 a day? Dude.

You’ve got the ‘Junk Score Threshold’ setting to +1 right? That should cut it down to 10-20 a day.

Still a pain in the ass mind, but a lesser pain.

  2. I have it set at +5. It makes no difference. Those inane “Nice site! Thanks!” spam messages still get through, while legitimate posts are flagged as junk. It’s infuriating.

Is “Nice site! Thanks!” even spam? It’s not selling anything. But it’s still obviously automated.
