R.I.P. Bam Bam Bigelow

Slam! Wrestling reports that Scott “Bam Bam” Bigelow was found dead at his home on Friday morning. The cause of death is yet to be determined, but he was a professional wrestler, he’d had issues with painkiller addiction in the past, and he was 45. That’s pretty much the life expectancy for those in his profession.

But the Beast from the East deserves to be remembered as more than just another dead wrestler. Sure, he was one of the best, most agile big men ever, a guy who, but for backstage politics, could have been an even bigger star than he was, but word has it that Bigelow was also a hero. Apparently, around 2000, he saved three children from a burning house, sustaining second-degree burns over 40 percent of his body in the process and ending up in hospital for a two-month recovery period. That’s kind of fitting, what with the flames decorating his ring attire and tattooed scalp.

It’s hard to find much to verify that story, but I’d like to think it’s true. Even if not, it’s still a shame.

  1. Peter Lynn,
I will mourn Bam Bam just as I’ve mourned the demise of every other professional wrestler I’ve never heard of.
Thank you for this touching tribute.

  3. Something about the above comment actually makes me get a little pumped up about Bam Bam’s death. Rock and roll, Dead Bam Bam!
