An Apple for an Apple

12May08

If you’ve been reading this blog for the last four years or so, you know that I’m a fan of the band Beulah. If you haven’t, you probably have no idea who Beulah even are. That’s because they haven’t existed for the last four years, and I appear to be one of the few people who knew who they were in the first place, which is sort of why they broke up. (That is, they broke up because they weren’t selling enough records; they didn’t dislike my fandom so much that they stopped making music to spite me.)

Although I’ve read interviews with lead singer and chief songwriter Miles Kurosky since then that indicated he was working on a solo album, nothing has materialized so far. I dimly remembered reading that the reason for the delay was that he’d had both arms ripped off by a bear. Deciding that this couldn’t be right, I went back and checked, and he’s merely had two shoulder surgeries and grown a beard. So, I wasn’t that far off.

The good news is that he’s finally broken his silence and joined the online community of — oh, about four years ago — by setting up his own Myspace page. And the better news is that he’s got a new song there available for streaming called “An Apple for an Apple”.

“I think it’s the final version, but who knows, it could change,” says Miles. “Hopefully you all like it.” And I do like it. I like it so much that I wanted to make sure I got a copy of this version just in case he decided to change it later. (Specifically, in case he decided to pull a Jeff Tweedy and change it for the much worse.) So, although it wasn’t enabled for download, I figured out a way around that and got an MP3 of “An Apple for An Apple” in all its FM-quality 96 kbit/s glory. Sorry if you didn’t want me to do that, Miles. I promise to buy your album though.

Man, I feel like a hacker now. I’m a regular Matthew Broderick, all war-dialing NORAD computers to play tic tac toe and global thermonuclear war.

Now who wishes he’d gotten a car instead of a computer?
