Luc Bourdon 1987-2008

I just found out that Vancouver Canucks defenceman Luc Bourdon was killed in a motorcycle accident this afternoon. He was only 21 and an inexperienced rider.

I feel sick. One of my great pleasures when playing EA’s NHL game series has been to assemble a theoretical Team Quebec. Admittedly, Bourdon was from New Brunswick, but as a francophone, he was a natural choice to flesh out my admittedly thin defensive corps. Now, just as I had to take the late Sergei Zholtok off Team Latvia, I’m reluctantly cutting him from my roster.

Tragic, senseless, shocking news. My condolences to his friends and family and to all Canucks fans.

Addendum: The Vancouver Province made a questionable claim in its coverage of the story:

Bourdon’s loved ones met with every one of the mourners, including Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang. He left his team in the middle of the Stanley Cup final to come to Shippagan for the visitation.

Letang left Pittsburgh on Sunday, landed in Moncton and drove more than four years to be at the memorial.

Four years? Now that’s a long drive. Where was this memorial service — Alpha Centauri? See you back home for the start of the 2016 season, Kris.
